Tad DeSanto outsider primitive artist Lousiville Kentucky Folk Art, Outsider primitive art

Tad DeSanto

I’m an outsider/primitive artist living in Louisville, Kentucky. I generally work with oil pastels. They’re similar to crayons, which suit the childlike nature of my pieces. I usually paint on masonite, sometimes wood. I usually “paint” with my fingers and use a nail or some other pointed tool to incise or create texture. I really enjoy my “hands-on” technique. It’s a very satisfying, direct and tactile experience.

I also like to make collages. I love creating strange juxtapositions, discovering a hidden composition that ties it all together. My technique, like my paintings, is entirely hands–on. I’m a cut-and-paste guy. After I’ve “built” the piece I scan it to produce a digital image. After it’s scanned I print it on photo paper and frame it.

My art comes from the heart. The images are inspired by dreams, memories and personal thoughts regarding the political and social dramas of the day. “What a world…holy moly!"

I've sold my artwork to individual collectors through the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, Swanson Reed Gallery and other Louisville area art galleries. I've also sold work at the Good Folk Fest, an annual folk art festival held at the Mellwood Art & Entertainment Center in Louisville.

I’ve traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. I’ve also had a varied work life. I’ve worked at a reform school, mental hospital, warehouse, restaurants, stained glass studios, and picture frame shops. For almost twenty years I was a writer and project coordinator, producing marketing communications for a wide variety of businesses and non-profit organizations.

I hope you like the images displayed here. I think they’re unique, strange and wonderful.
